Rockwall County officials announced on April 24 a series of planned lane closures and roadwork activities affecting Interstate 30, FM 3549, FM 548, Erby Campbell, and related frontage roads from April 24 through May 2.
The scheduled work is expected to impact traffic overnight and during daytime hours in various locations. The purpose of these closures is to allow for bridge activities, replacement of damaged infrastructure, placement of concrete pavement, unloading drainage boxes, and other construction-related tasks. Contractor crews will coordinate with emergency services to ensure access during the closures if emergencies occur.
Among the planned activities are eastbound right lane closures on I-30 from John King to FM 3549 overnight between April 24 and April 25 for replacement of damaged CCA. Additional overnight work includes left lane repairs between FM 3549 and Ben Payne as well as westbound repairs in the same area. From Sunday through Saturday next week, U-turns at FM 3549 will be closed overnight as needed for bridge work; similar daytime U-turn restrictions are also scheduled starting Monday. Flagging operations will take place on FM roads and frontage roads for unloading or installing drainage boxes.
This period coincides with demographic changes in Rockwall County schools. The number of at-risk students increased by 3.4% during the current school year to a total of 7,777 students according to the Texas Education Agency (source). Additionally, Rockwall County ranked forty-eighth highest among Texas counties for total at-risk student enrollment this year (source). White students made up just over half (51.7%) of local public school enrollment with a count of more than twelve thousand; Hispanic students were the second largest group at about twenty-six percent (source).
Officials said they expect minimal disruption outside designated closure times since many restrictions will only be enforced when active construction is underway.
