Local authorities announced on May 1 a series of planned lane and road closures along Interstate 30 and nearby routes scheduled from Sunday, May 3 through Saturday, May 9. The closures are due to ongoing bridge activities, pavement work, and drainage improvements.
The temporary traffic changes are expected to impact travel in Rockwall County as crews conduct overnight and daytime work. Officials say the closures will be implemented as needed and opened when not in use, aiming to minimize disruptions. Contractor crews have coordinated with emergency services to ensure access during emergencies should they arise.
Among the planned closures are east-to-west and west-to-east U-turns at FM 3549 during both overnight (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) and daytime (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) hours for bridge activities. Other work includes placing concrete pavement on I-30 eastbound left lane from FM 548 to FM 2642 overnight, flagging operations for embankment removals at FM 548 northbound/southbound during the day, unloading drainage boxes along I-30 eastbound frontage road from FM 3549 to Erby Campbell Road, full closure of FM 3549 northbound/southbound overnight for bridge activities, installing drainage boxes between Erby Campbell Road and FM 35 during daytime hours, unloading drainage boxes at FM 35 with flagging operations by day, placement of hot mix on I-30 westbound right lane and ramp from FM 35 to FM 548 overnight, freeway closure of I-30 westbound overnight for pouring a bridge deck at FM 3549 through Friday, May 8th; as well as similar nighttime closure on I-30 eastbound left lane at that location.
Rockwall County has seen an increase in its student population facing challenges outside transportation infrastructure projects. The number of students considered at-risk rose by about three percent this school year—totaling more than seven thousand students according to the Texas Education Agency. The county’s schools now rank forty-eighth highest statewide in total enrollment of such students according to data provided by state officials.
Demographic information shows that white students remain the largest ethnic group within Rockwall County schools with over twelve thousand enrolled this academic year—just above half of all students—while Hispanic students make up just over one quarter according to figures released by education authorities.
As construction continues throughout next week on these key transportation routes alongside changing demographics in local schools, residents can expect ongoing updates regarding future project phases or additional traffic advisories.
