Rockwall County officials announced on May 8 a series of planned lane closures and traffic changes along Interstate 30 and nearby roads for the week of May 11 through May 16. The scheduled work will affect several locations, including FM 3549, FM 548, FM 35, Erby Campbell Boulevard, and associated frontage roads.
The closures are necessary to allow bridge activities at FM 3549, installation of drainage boxes, pavement marking operations, and other roadwork. Daytime closures will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while overnight work is set between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Some U-turn lanes at FM 3549 will be closed intermittently as needed but are not expected to remain closed for the entire period stated.
Contractor crews plan to coordinate with emergency medical services (EMS), fire departments, and police agencies to ensure emergency access is maintained throughout all closure periods.
These infrastructure improvements come at a time when Rockwall County schools have seen notable demographic changes. The number of at-risk students in Rockwall County rose by 3.4% during the 2023-24 school year, totaling 7,777 students according to the Texas Education Agency (Texas Education Agency). During this same period, Rockwall County schools ranked as having the forty-eighth highest total enrollment of at-risk students in Texas according to the Texas Education Agency. White students made up the largest ethnic group in local schools with a total of about half of all enrolled students; Hispanic students comprised just over one quarter according to the Texas Education Agency.
Further updates regarding construction schedules or additional road impacts may be provided by county officials as work progresses.
