The U.S. Post Office in downtown Greenville and the Post Office in Rockwall County will be assigned new names after Congress approved two bills introduced by U.S. Rep John Ratcliffe of Texas.
The Greenville post office will be named after Audie Murphy, a Hunt County native who was one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War II.
The post office in Rockwall County will be renamed after the district's former congressman, Rep. Ralph Hall.
Murphy was born on June 20, 1925 and lived in the Kingston area. Murphy joined the U.S. Army in 1942, signing up at the Greenville post office before deploying to North Africa to help prepare for the invasion of Sicily, Italy. While in service, Murphy received every medal of valor that the U.S. Armed Forces had to offer. Some of the medals were given to Murphy more than once. Murphy also received five medals from France and Belgium.
Ratcliffe said Murphy and Hall would be honored today for leading remarkable, noteworthy lives.
“From beginning to end, Ralph Hall lived one of the most extraordinary and remarkable lives of anyone ever to serve in Congress, and Audie Murphy rose to become one of the most decorated American war heroes of all time,” Ratcliffe said.
Ratcliffe also says the legacy of these two men will live on for years to come.
“The people of the 4th District of Texas are proud of the impact these accomplished Northeast Texans have made in our own community and beyond, and the post offices renamed on their behalf will commemorate their great legacies for years to come,” Ratcliffe said.
