Efforts to create an Emergency Services District for Hunt County are taking longer than anticipated because of the coronavirus emergency.
A public meeting scheduled for March 16 was postponed according to the Herald Banner. The meeting was to discuss the creation of the district and the possible tax rate that would accompany its implementation. The formation of the district will be placed on the November general election ballot if the Hunt County Court of Commissioners grants the petition.
Cash Fire Department Chief Ryan Biggers told the Herald Banner creation of the district would benefit the county’s volunteer fire departments. In addition to helping finance outdated equipment, it could allow for paid firefighters to supplement volunteers who often work during the day.
The district would also pay dividends in the form of tax relief for county residents. Biggers told the Herald Banner much of the county has a fire safety rating of a 10. The addition of the district could lower ratings to a three or a four.
