McKinney residents will vote in November on whether to recall District 1 Council Member La'Shadion Shemwell from the City Council.

Before the coronavirus pandemic hit, voters in the entire city were going to vote in May on whether Shemwell should be recalled. The election would have been citywide, even though District 1 only stretches on the east side of the city, according to Community Impact Newspaper.

Shemwell filed a lawsuit against the city, arguing the vote would have been diluted by members who didn't reside in District 1, Community Impact Newspaper reported. The lawsuit claims the City Charter is unconstitutional for allowing the entire city to vote in the recall election.

McKinney Mayor George Fuller said the entire city should be able to vote, according to Community Impact Newspaper.

“His actions do not just impact the district,”  Fuller told Community Impact Newspaper. “They impact every single taxpayer in this city.”

In mid-March, Shemwell dropped his lawsuit against the city to focus all his efforts on the coronavirus, according to Texas Scorecard

“But more importantly I need my total focus to be on saving as many lives as possible during this pandemic," Shemwell said on Facebook after dropping the lawsuit.

McKinney officials voted to move the recall election to Nov. 3 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
