Unemployment has skyrocketed in Rockwall County because of shutdowns and layoffs due to the COVID-19 crisis.
A report issued at the end of May by the Texas Workforce Commission documented an astounding rise in unemployment – from 4.3 percent in March to 11.8 percent in April. The April 2020 unemployment figure is believed to be a record, the Rockwall Herald Banner reported.
Unemployment records in Rockwall County only date back to 1990, with the highest previous monthly unemployment rate occurring during the Great Recession in April 2010, when the figure was 7.2 percent. In April 2019, the unemployment rate in Rockwall County was 2.7 percent.
The Herald Banner lists the number of people who were working in Rockwall County in May as 42,513. Between April 2019 and April 2020, 7,508 jobs in Rockwall County have been lost.
A total of 5,899 people in the county filed for unemployment benefits during April.
