Sales tax revenue in Kaufman County remains strong despite a statewide decline, according to the Texas Comptroller’s office.
Overall, sales tax revenue for the state fell by more than 13% for May as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and a downturn in global oil prices, reports inForney.
Almost every city in Kaufman County showed an increase in sales tax revenue for the month of April. By contrast, the City of Terrell reported a decline of approximately 5.5% during the same period, which is still much lower than the statewide average. The city reports overall yearly revenue is up by 10.4% from the same time last year, inForney reported.
“The business closures and restrictions and stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic spurred deep drops in collections from restaurants, amusement and recreation services, and physical retail stores,” Comptroller Glenn Hegar said. “These declines were offset in part by increases from big box retailers and grocery stores that remained open as essential businesses, online retailers and restaurants that could readily pivot to takeout and delivery service.”
