HHSC Information Technology recently won two awards from the Texas Association of State Systems for Computing and Communications and was honored at the association’s annual conference.
The TASSCC awards recognize outstanding achievements by the people and teams that work diligently to improve systems and processes in Texas state government and higher education.
HHSC Portfolio Project Manager Bryan Standley won the Rising Star Award, and IT’s Infectious Disease Data Integration (IDDI) system won the Project Excellence Award for Data Sharing and Management.
The IT strategy team put in a huge effort to develop IDDI, which automates the process of collecting and adjusting COVID-19-related data from various sources and creating reports and dashboards needed to support the state’s pandemic response.
“The agency has wanted a system like this for a long time because many things have been done manually,” said Wayne Vore, chief technology officer. “There was a need to provide data to people in the organization who needed it quickly. From conception to production was around seven months. It was not a simple thing to create, but it fulfills a great need, and our team was able to get it done quickly.”
IDDI’s goals are to improve trust in infectious disease data, facilitate reporting and establish data governance across the Texas Department of State Health Services. The team hopes it can serve as a foundation for future infectious disease reporting and analytics.
“The IDDI toolset is state of the art and allows for analysis of large databases while providing a variety of ways to visualize and display the results,” said Monica Gamez, Laboratory and Infectious Disease Services deputy associate commissioner.
TASSCC was established to encourage effective use of computing and communications resources in state agencies and public institutions of higher education in Texas as well as to foster communication and cooperation between state agencies.
