Golf Moves Up To Tie For Fifth at The Carpetbagger Classic

38

The golf team began its spring season by finishing in a tie for fifth place among the 14 teams to compete at The Carpetbagger Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Worthington Manor Golf Club.

The Big Red was among the field's biggest movers between the rounds, ascending three spots after sitting eighth following Saturday's first round. The course, which played to 7,034 yards with a USGA rating of 74.7 and 145 slope, played nearly a full stroke and a half harder in Sunday's second round.

Cornell's team total of 304-306—610 was tied with Colgate, Fairleigh Dickinson and Howard, trailing just runaway champion Rhode Island (583), Robert Morris (596), Towson (600) and Bryant (600).

Leading the Big Red charge was the junior tandem of Martin Gutierrez and Josh Lundmark, who were tied for 12th individually at a total of 6-over-par 150. It's Gutierrez's best career individual finish, and it's the fourth time in six events this season that Lundmark has placed in the top 20.

Senior Gus Lascola had the team's best individual second round with a 74, moving up 30 spots to tie for 32nd at 11-over 155 – a group that also included junior Benjamin Choe.

Cornell is back in action next weekend at the Battle at Rum Pointe, an event hosted by Iona at Rum Pointe Seaside Golf Links in Berlin, Md.
