The Cornell baseball team will be on the road again this week, as they head to Binghamton on Tuesday for a midweek matchup with the Bearcats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Bearcats Baseball Complex in Vestal, N.Y.
This past weekend, Cornell took a single contest in a three-game stretch against Ivy League rival Princeton, bringing its record to 7-14 overall and 3-6 in conference play. The Big Red got out to an early lead in the first game of the series against Princeton thanks to a second-inning solo shot off the bat of Max Jensen, but the Tigers roared back to score nine unanswered runs in the subsequent five innings. The deficit was too much for Cornell to overcome, as Princeton took game one 12-3.
In the middle game of the series, Cornell's Spencer Edwards silenced Princeton's bats, conceding only one run while striking out eight over 8.0 innings on the bump. While Edwards dealt, the Big Red bats came alive. Cornell plated five runs off a pair of RBI from Wils Guy, a solo home run from Ryan Ross, a two-run double from Joe Hollerbach, and a sacrifice fly from Nathan Waugh to jump out to a 5-0 lead after six. Princeton pushed a run across in the seventh, but the comeback attempt fell short as the Big Red took the game 7-1. Cornell and Princeton traded blows early in Sunday's rubber match, but a five-run fourth inning from Princeton powered the Tigers to a 10-6 victory to close out the series.
Binghamton will bring a 7-19 overall record into Tuesday's matchup with Cornell. In its most recent action, the Bearcats took two-of-three games against conference opponent Hartford. Binghamton won the first game of its series against Hartford 9-8 in walk-off fashion, scoring the winning run off a Nick Rosseli RBI single in the 10th inning. The Bearcats hammered Hartford in the second game 9-2, but could not complete the sweep, falling in the series finale 2-1.
Tuesday's contest will be the first meeting between Cornell and Binghamton this season. The squads are scheduled for two more matchups scattered over the next four weeks, with the next game set for Wednesday, April 20 at Hoy Field in Ithaca, N.Y., and the final game slated for Tuesday, May 3 at the Bearcat Baseball Complex.
