Cornell men's ice hockey associate head coach Ben Syer will join USA Hockey at its National Junior Evaluation Camp in Plymouth, Mich. on July 29-30. In all, 60 of the top young players in the country will compete for spots on the 2022 and 2023 U.S. National Junior Teams during the 10-day selection camp.
"I'm honored to represent Cornell at the evaluation camp and to have the opportunity to work with some of the top young players in the United States," Syer said. "I'm excited to play a small role in assisting with the 2023 team that will compete for a mold medal starting this December."
Syer will be assisting Quinnipiac's Rand Pecknold (2023 U.S. National Junior team head coach) on the ice as he evaluates and ultimately assembles a squad ready to compete for a gold medal. Syer's work over more than a decade with the Big Red has earned him national recognition. The Big Red has posted a 186-98-47 overall record (.633) during his time on the Big Red staff with four NCAA Tournament appearances, five Ivy League crowns and three ECAC Hockey regular season titles.
USA Hockey claimed the 2021 IHF Junior World title in Edmonton, Alberta and also won gold four other times (2004, 2010, 2013, 2017) and medaled eight additional times since 1986. The 2022 team will play at the world junior championship from August 9-20 (originally scheduled for last December, postponed due to COVID-19) in Edmonton, with the final 23-player roster expected to be announced at the conclusion of the camp. The 2023 championship will be contested in late December in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick.
