In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, the HHS Office of Disability Prevention for Children (ODPC) is offering its second annual statewide virtual conference throughout March.
Texas is home to an estimated 480,000 children with developmental disabilities, according to the 2019 HHS Texas Statewide Behavioral Health Strategic Plan. Each Tuesday in March, the conference will offer a series of free webinars to highlight key topics on preventing intellectual and developmental disabilities in children.
“Our goal is to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders — including community-based and government organizations, health care professionals, educators, families, caregivers and others — to discuss and learn about strategies for implementing positive change in the lives of children and families across Texas,” said ODPC project manager Jay Smith.
In each webinar, leaders and experts in health care, education and other areas will share their experiences and provide valuable information that attendees can apply personally and professionally.
The ODPC statewide virtual conference takes place from 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Central time on the following dates:
- March 7: Prevention and Early Intervention/Women’s Health
- March 14: Injury Prevention in Infants and Children
- March 21: Maternal Infant Health/Early Childhood Intervention
- March 28: Children with Special Childhood Needs/Addressing Autism in Children
Opening Keynote Presenters:
- Sasha Rasco, chief prevention and community well-being officer, Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) Prevention and Early Intervention Division
- Sarah Abrahams, deputy associate commissioner, DFPS Prevention and Early Intervention Division
- Sally Deitch, executive vice president, Nursing and Operations Infrastructure at Ascension
