HHS Highlights Low Vision Awareness Month
During Low Vision Awareness Month, the HHSC Vision Loss in Older Adults Awareness Campaign highlights programs and services available for older adults with vision loss.
“Older Texans experiencing vision loss deserve services and resources that support independence in their homes and community,” said Juanita Barker, director of Blind Services at the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). “We are striving to create better avenues to reach out to these Texans, so they know how to access the services and resources.
“Our goal is to provide services that increase independence and partner with others in Texas, so people have a full spectrum of support and services that are tailored to meet their specific needs.”
In collaboration with the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, TWC, and stakeholders and advocates for older adults with vision loss, HHSC has created an array of materials for older adults, their family caregivers and professionals who may serve older adults with vision loss.
“There is life after loss of sight,” said Larry Johnson, advocate for older adults with vision loss and member of the HHSC Aging Texas Well Advisory Committee. “It is vitally important for older people who begin experiencing vision loss to receive the training and resources to help them successfully ‘age in place’ and engage in meaningful activities in their homes and communities.”
