Peavy named to Southland All-Academic team

Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball scholar-athlete Alex Peavy has been selected to the Southland Conference All-Academic team on Thursday morning.

Peavy (San Antonio – Smithson Valley) is named to the second team, being among 10 student-athletes from around the SLC that are recognized. Earlier this year, Peavy was also honored as an Academic All-District scholar by the College Sports Communicators. He started 22 of 33 games at the center position, scored nine points at Air Force, blocked two shots or more in four games.

The Lions went 13-20 last season, its first in NCAA Division I and the Southland. A&M-Commerce finished fifth during the regular season, advancing to the Southland Conference Tournament.

Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each school. Student-Athletes of the Year are voted upon by an awards committee which consists of one administrator from each member school. Voting for one's own athletes is not permitted.

To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport's championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions during the most recently completed season.
