The future of Operation Lone Star is now threatened as a Travis County state district judge calls Abbott's border enforcement efforts "unconstitutional."
"Liberal judges are easily stopping Greg Abbott's plans for the Texas Border because they were never designed to work. We don't need any more photo ops while illegal aliens flood across the border. We need a governor that is willing to call this problem what it is: An invasion," Texas gubernatorial candidate Don Huffines said.
A 36-year-old Ecuadorian man who entered the United States illegally was arrested on trespassing charges as part of Abbott's Operation Lone Star "arrest and jail" approach. He is an engineer by profession, and his name is Jesus Alberto Guzman Curipoma. He doesn't have any criminal history.
A state district judge ruled that the man's arrest violated the U.S. Constitution by overstepping federal immigration laws, and the ruling may have set off a wave of legal challenges to Gov. Greg Abbott's border security initiative. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a tweet that he would challenge the ruling. Abbott said that Operation Lone Star is necessary because the federal government has refused to secure the border.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), border patrol agent encounters with people trying to enter the U.S. illegally between Oct. 1, 2020 and Sept. 30, 2021 rose to 1.956 million, up from 646,822 during the previous year.
Huffines said he openly shows his support for border security. If he is elected, Huffines is promising to finish the border wall, deploy the Texas National Guard to aid in securing the border and end all taxpayer subsidies to residents in the country without authorization.
