Amidst a swirl of political controversy, Congressman Lance Gooden (R-TX) sharply criticized the indictment of former U.S. President Donald Trump, denouncing it as another chapter in what he labeled a pattern of politically motivated attacks. Gooden suggested that the charges were an attempt by a perceived left-leaning regime to distract from broader concerns and questions surrounding the upcoming 2024 election.

“Political witch hunts against President Trump are the go-to playbook of a far-left regime that knows it’s lost the confidence of the American people," Rep. Gooden said, according to an Aug. 2 press release. "If Joe Biden believed he could beat Donald Trump in 2024 he would not have to rely on phony charges and the American people know it.”

The third indictment against Donald J. Trump alleges that from Nov. 14, 2020, to Jan. 20, 2021, he knowingly conspired with both known and unknown co-conspirators to defraud the United States by obstructing the legitimate collection, counting, and certifying of the 2020 presidential election results. The indictment states that Trump and his co-conspirators disseminated numerous false claims of widespread election fraud, including claims of ineligible voters and compromised voting machines, claims that he has repeatedly informed were untrue but chose to disregard.

Trump responded to the indictments by labeling them as "election interference" and "prosecutorial misconduct." In a July 31 post on Truth Social, he criticized the timing of the charges, questioning why they weren't filed earlier. Trump suggested that the charges were strategically delayed to negatively impact the 2024 Presidential Election.

Additionally, Trump is confronting allegations in a separate case initiated by the special counsel, which revolve around his alleged mishandling of national secrets subsequent to his White House tenure. According to NBC News, earlier this year, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg brought charges against Trump in relation to hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election. Moreover, Trump remains subject to potential indictment in Georgia, where an ongoing investigation by a prosecutor centers on the attempt to overturn the election results in that state.

The Texan reports that on April 19, Rep. Gooden endorsed Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination, citing his commitment to countering the leftist agenda and protecting American jobs, the economy, border security, the military, and veterans. Gooden's endorsement followed a positive meeting with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, but Gooden firmly believes Trump is uniquely positioned to address the challenges facing the nation.
