Lion Athletics excels in classroom in Fall 2022

Texas A&M University-Commerce student-athletes continued their excellence in the classroom during the fall 2022 semester.

As many of the A&M-Commerce student-athletes competed in NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference for the first time, the athletic department recorded a cumulative grade point of average of 3.25, marking the 14th consecutive semester the athletic department has had a grade point average above a 3.00.

"Student-athlete success is our number one priority," Interim Director of Athletics Eric Coleman said. "We strive to prepare young people for success academically and in life as future leaders. I'm very proud of our student-athletes for their hard work and the culture of academic achievement they've created. I'm also grateful to our coaches and academic staff, and our university faculty and staff, for and their tireless commitment to Lion students."

With support from faculty, student success teams, academic advisors, and the staff in the Thrower Center for Student-Athlete Success, the Lions succeeded at elite levels. Nine sport programs recorded grade point averages of 3.00 or higher in the fall semester.

"I am so proud of our student-athletes for their determination and hard-work to succeed," said Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Success Haley Major. "Our student-athletes are competitors not only in their sport, but also in the classroom and in the community to demonstrate that they are more than athletes.

"This is what it is all about. I'm very thankful for all the support they received to make this a team effort and achievement for our student-athletes and our department. I'm also excited to see all that we can and will achieve going forward as we continue to prioritize student-athlete success."

Individually, 41 student-athletes were named to the president's list, recording perfect 4.00 grade point averages during the fall semester and 47 were named to the Dean's List, recording grade point averages between 3.50 and 3.99. Last week, Lion athletics celebrated 23 graduates, who participated in December graduation.

"We are proud of the academic success of our student-athletes" said Provost Dr. Tammie Vacha-Haase. "What they accomplished this semester in the classroom is a testament to the talented scholar-athletes our coaches are recruiting. The dedicated faculty at this institution and I look forward to continuing to support our student-athletes in their continued academic success."
